Professor Matt Marti
Professor of Parasitology
Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology
Matt Marti is a molecular and cell biologist with longstanding interest in parasitology. In the past 12 years he has led a research program focusing on malaria transmission – from basic biology to translational aspects.
Their lab identified the human bone marrow as a niche for the development of malaria transmission stages. Subsequent work in their lab has confirmed this finding in non-human primates and the rodent malaria model. Recently they discovered a serum phospholipid as the environmental sensor regulating parasite growth and transmission during human infection. This work forms the basis for ongoing systematic dissection of this pathway in malaria parasites.
